Barrio Chino

The book unfolds as a sustained, lyrical meditation, bringing together photographs and poems by the artist to trace the interior worlds of Cuban Chinese communities across the island between 2009 and 2019. Attuned to the quiet materiality of lived space, the work lingers within domestic rooms, storefronts, temples, and sites of gathering—places shaped as much by memory and migration as by daily use. Surfaces, objects, and gestures accrue meaning, becoming vessels through which histories of displacement, resilience, and cultural continuity are held and reimagined.
Moving with an intimate, almost tactile sensibility, the project dwells in the affective dimensions of belonging and estrangement. The poems do not describe the images so much as echo and extend them, opening a space for reflection. Together, text and image evoke a sense of well-being intertwined with the religious practices, social relations, and political conditions that shape everyday life.
